Administrative HistoryJohn Egerton 1796-1876 was the elder son of Rev. Charles Egerton, and Mary Coker, the father being vicar of Thorncombe co. Dorset, and later of Epping co.Essex and Hextable co.Kent. John had an uncle John Egerton, a bachelor, also in orders, who in 1805 became preacher and also school-master of the grammar school at Bunbury. John succeeded him to the post of preacher in 1829, resigning in 1849 when he retired to Hextable where the family had property and where he died in 1876.
John married Ellen Gould of Northaw Place, Hatfield co.Hert., and had ten children, of whom the eldest was John Coker, a second diarist, born in 1830. He took a degree at Brazenose College, Oxford, was made priest in 1856 and rector of Burwash co.Sussex in 1867, presented there by his father. He remained there until his death in 1888. The main series of his diaries, 1841-1884, is at the East Sussex Record Office
